Being Dead

Known for crafting technicolor, self-contained sonic universes, Being Dead's most recent album, EELS, takes a deeper dive into their psyche while remaining unpredictable across its 16 tracks. It’s a wild and joyous ride from two “true-blue freak bitch besties” making music from their little house in the heart of Austin, Texas.

Their 2023 debut, When Horses Would Run—praised as “glorious and timeless” by Gorilla vs. Bear—took years to complete, delivering a polished final product that contrasted with the raw energy of their live shows. Determined to shake things up for their next release, Being Dead headed to Los Angeles, recording with GRAMMY-winning producer John Congleton. The duo wrote songs up until the final days before leaving, embracing a new creative process that pushed their sound in exciting directions. They’ve also evolved into a trio for live performances, welcoming bassist Nicole Roman-Johnston, who co-wrote and recorded bass and vocals on several tracks.

The result is EELS, a darker, rougher, and more raucous record—infused with heartbreak, excitement, enchantment, and high-energy chaos. Never ones to repeat themselves, Falcon Bitch and Shmoofy keep listeners on their toes, exemplified by lead single “Firefighters”—a distorted garage rock ripper told from the perspective of an overworked Dalmatian at a fire station. The accompanying video, directed by URZULKA, is a surreal and playful fever dream. The band describes it as “like creating an intricate handshake with all your buddies—riddled with inside jokes and giggles.”

Stay tuned for more from Being Dead as they gear up to hit the road this Summer!
